A lot of people ask me how I get things so separated with nice clean white backgrounds. It’s really easy to do, and these photos should give you a pretty good idea.

You can see in the first photo that I’ve got a softbox above the product, giving it good even light. The softbox helps a lot because it prevents any light from coming back toward the camera and creating any glare.

Next, and this is really key, I’ve got a flash pointing at the wall behind the product. This blows out the background nicely so that I can take the photo into photoshop and isolate the product with the magic wand tool, and then wipe out any inconsistencies, giving me the third and final photo you see there.

All this was done in about 15 min setup time, and with really cheap and portable equipment. You don’t need to be a millionaire to get good pics.

Keep doing good work!

I’m often asked what my polarizing filter is and why I use it, and I always feel like my explanation falls short. It’s just one of those things that you really need to see to understand properly.

One of the great things about polarizing filters is how they can get rid of reflections in glass. Here, I was attempting to take photos of the new car that Jenny and I just got, but there were really big reflections in the windows. The polarizing filter removed some of the reflections, but couldn’t do it for all of them. So I just took one photo removing the reflections on one side of the car, then another removing the reflections on the other side. Then in photoshop, I simply layered them on top of one another to use the parts of each photo that I like.

In the gallery below, you can see the first two photos are the ones I meshed together to make the 3rd photo. The rest are just gratuitous shots of the car. We’re really excited to have such a nice vehicle.

Error: the communication with Picasa Web Albums didn't go as expected. Here's what Picasa Web Albums said:

No album found.
